Display expert explains why Apple Watch sapphire crystal degrades image quality

There are three models of the Apple Watch, the Apple Watch Sport ,the Apple Watch and the Apple Watch Edition. One of the things that makes their models different is the displays. Specifically, the Apple Watch Sport comes with an Ion-Y glass monitor, while the same time as the Watch and Watch Edition each have Sapphire Crystal.

According to the in-intensity record of Dr. Raymond Soneira for Displaymate, each of the displays are pretty good. However Dr. Raymond Soneira appreciates the Ion-Y Glass more than the costlier Sapphire Glass.

Speaking about the numbers, the sapphire reflected approximately about 8.2 % of light in DisplayMate’s exams as against to a reflectance of 4.6 % for Ion-Y glass used in Apple Watch Sport. The monitors on high end Apple Watch were found to be building up reflections and color moving while decreasing distinction, thus degrading image quality as opposed to the Watch Sport. It's probably not really Apple's fault because the sapphire glass used in the high end models of the Apple Watch is the second strongest transparent material after diamond. And the The Ion-X glass used in the Apple Watch Sport is five times stronger than regular glass, says Apple.

From Apple Watch Craftsmanship webpage on the company’s website:
Ion-X glass is the same material used in the windows of space shuttles and high-speed trains. This glass is thin and light, yet surprisingly strong — five times stronger than regular glass. Which made it the perfect choice for Apple Watch Sport. There are many ways to strengthen glass at the surface, but Ion-X glass is hardened down to its molecules.
During the manufacturing process, the glass is dipped in a 750-degree molten potassium salt bath. That’s when ion exchange takes place, with the smaller sodium ions being removed from the glass and replaced by larger potassium ions. As the glass cools, these larger ions create an extremely hard surface layer that is resistant to scratches and impact.

Dr. Raymond Soneira says that “Enhanced Sapphire” will solve this problem in the future, however for now the sapphire glass mirrored Apple Watches may irritate some people.

After doing a couple of tests of Apple’s sapphire with a diamond tester, YouTube ‘Unbox Therapy’ has given the conclusion that the sapphire coating on the Apple Watch screen matches with the sapphire used by other watchmakers like Tissot on their high-end luxury analog watches.
