TSMC's A9 Chip performed way better than the Samsung's Chip in battery Benchmarks

After the launch of new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus few weeks ago, People discovered variation in their iPhone and discovered that their iPhones are powered by two different Chips, one from TSMC which is a bit larger "16nm" and the other from Samsung which is a bit smaller "14nm". With this people started experimenting with their iPhones to find an iPhone with better A9 Chip. In start data showed 60 and 40 percent split of Chips in iPhone from TSMC and Samsung, respectively.

Benchmarks showed there is not a noticeable difference in the performance of these two different A9 chips but today some Battery testing  benchmarks suggested that iPhone Units with TSMC's chip have significantly better battery life.

Following the news, Youtube start recieving videos with battery tests between TSMC's and Samsung's Chip.

A video from Austin Evans compared Same two iPhone 6s, one having Samsung's chip and one with TSMC's Chip, Set both iPhone on same settings and performed a Geekbench 3 test on 50 percent of battery remaining, he discovered that iPhone with TSMC's chip lasted 50 minutes more than the iPhone containing Samsung's chip and the iPhone with Samsung's chip remain hotter while the test.

The Youtuber though test both iPhone in routine usage like watching Youtube videos and stuff like that and at the end between battery life there was only difference of 1 percent. But while heavy usage he noticed TSMC comes out on the top.

Another Youtuber performed some tests by same settings and ran a 30 minute time-lapse, After the result, the iPhone 6s with Samsung was down to 84 percent while iPhone with TSMC's Chip was at 89 percent. While recording 10 minutes of 4K and importing it to iMovie, At the end iPhone with Samsung's chip was at 55 percent while the iPhone containing TSMC's chip was at 62 percent.

At the conclusion, there is a difference between both iPhones having different chips, but in real life result are not that noticeable but there is a difference of nearly 22 percent in battery life between devices running Samsung's and TSMC's chip.

Update: Apple claims the difference between Samsung's chip and TSMC's chip in battery comparison is only 2-3 percent in real life. The test done continuously to check the difference are unrealistic.

So, which Chip your iPhone have ?

iPhone 6s comes with two dissimilar A9 Chips, namely from TSMC and Samsung

Sometime before the official launch of the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s Plus, several reports were claiming that  both manufactures Samsung and TSMC were developing the A9 chipset for the Apple iPhone 6s and 6s Plus.

Thus there was a sort of befuddlement over how the split would work, because the both companies Samsung and TSMC used different technologies. Samsung was said to manufacture chips through the 14-nanometer process while on the other hand TSMC was rumored to be using the 16-nanometer process.

After doing numerous teardowns of the iPhone 6s the folks at Chipworks have confirmed that the devices do have chips from both TSMC and Samsung for sure.  For comparison, the die size of TSMC processor is fairly larger than the die size of the processor made by Samsung.

The chipset "APL0898"made by Samsung measures in at 96 square millimetres, while the chipset" APL1022" measures in at 104.5 square millimetres which manufactured by TSMC.

Moreover, Apple took the decision of sourcing chipsets from both TSMC and Samsung due to "major sourcing problems", says Chipworks. Apple has adopted several policies to for the prevention of manufacturing issue that can lead to delays.

Yet we are not sure that whether the difference in the size of chipsets will affect the performance of iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. But thankfully,  Chipworks has already planned to test out if there is a difference of performance in both chipsets from Samsung and TSMC.

Chip Makers are fighting for Apples A10 processor

Apple's devices with A9 chip are even not announced, but Chip Makers started rushing for orders of  Apple's A10 processor, The chip which is expected to be fitted in iPhone 7 in the end of 2016.

As TSMC was close to lose A9 order that's why the are working hard and investing without wastage of time and bringing equipments to make Apple satisfied with A9 chips so they can get orders of A10 chips in future.

To get orders, they have to set up a 10nm Pilot lane at 12 different factories in Hsinchu, which is expected to be completed by the end of the June. Semiconductor intellectual property program is also started by the company and they are already advertising its services to potentials clients by the end of the year.

They are several reasons show TSMC will try its best to impress Apple, but luckly last time they get order from Apple while Samsung was in opposition. Now Samsung appears to be  sucking more Apple's chip orders.

Earlier it was reported that Samsung took has taken all orders of Apple, but Foxconn Terry Gou influenced Apple to give some orders to the TSMC, Seems like Taiwanese wanted to work together to overcome the growing threat of Samsung.

It has been observed that Samsung will not make effort to get A10 chip orders from Apple as its the case of very important iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.
